Buccaneers Sink Vikings in Conference Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Bucs men's soccer team, 2-0 on the year, opened conference play on Saturday against Salem State. The Buccaneers had not beaten the Vikings since 2016, had not scored against them since 2018, and Salem was picked first in this year's conference preseason poll, while the Buccaneers were voted last. In this matchup, the Buccaneers threw a wrench into everything, shutting out the Vikes, 3-0.

How It Happened

After having a penalty kick saved in the opening minutes by Silve, the Buccaneers for a goal from Calvert in the 10th minute on a pass from Cullivan to give the Bucs the lead. Under seven minutes later, Calvert found the back of the net again, this time taking the ball into the box on his own and beating the keeper to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead. Maritime took that two-goal lead into the halftime break. 

In the second half, it took 35 minutes, but Williams gave the Bucs some late insurance, scoring his first-career goal in the 80th minute on a give-and-go from Butzbach, beating multiple Vikings' defenders and ultimately the keeper. The Bucs earned the 3-0 win to move to 3-0 on the season.
