14 Buccaneers Score in Win Over Salem State in LEC Play

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers men's lacrosse team hosted Salem State on Tuesday evening in conference play. Heading into the game, the teams were tied for second place in the LEC with 2-1 conference records. At the end of the game, the Bucs held sole possession of second place in the standings, beating the Vikings, 25-6.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Eli Ikkela and Daniel Kane led the Buccaneers' attack with four goals. In total, 14 players scored for Maritime in the win.
  • 12 different players tallied assists in the game, with two from Camden Stern.
  • Andy Aguado-Scheyer picked up a game-high eight ground balls.
  • On the faceoff, Dylan Taylor won 13 of 21 he took, and Colin Fitzsimmons won eight of the 14 that he took.

  • Connor Vitands led the Vikings with two goals. Four other players recorded one.
  • Four different players tallied an assist in the loss.
  • Payton Cabral picked up a game-high eight ground balls and won 13 of 29 faceoffs that he took in the game.
  • Defensively, three players caused one turnover for Salem.
  • In total, Salem picked up 28 ground balls, was successful on 13 of 21 clearances, won 14 of 35 faceoffs, and took 41 total shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored the first three goals of the game. Kane scored 56 seconds in, followed by James Sullivan and Quinn Mucha, giving the hosts an early 3-0 advantage. Salem scored back-to-back to cut the Bucs lead to one goal, 3-2. Zach Gambill and Mason McNulty closed out the first quarter with goals for the Bucs, and Maritime led 5-2 after the first.

In the second, the Bucs scored three goals in under two minutes at 10:50, 10:05, and 9:05 to extend their lead to six goals, 8-2. Salem got their only goal of the second from Vittands at 8:07, then the Bucs scored five more times before the halftime break. The Bucs led 13-3 at the half.

Gambill scored first in the third quarter for the Bucs, and though Salem scored twice in the quarter, Maritime netted five goals, giving them an 18-5 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth, the Buccaneers scored seven times. Four in the first half of the period, followed by a Salem goal at 5:28. In the final four minutes of the game, the Buccaneers scored three more times, from McNulty, Brady Hofeman, and Ikkela to seal the 25-6 victory.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel to Castleton, Vermont, on Saturday to take on the VTSU Castleton Spartans in conference play at 4 pm.
