Bucs Pounce Wildcats in Season Opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Thursday evening, the Buccaneer men's lacrosse team traveled to Rhode Island to take on Johnson and Wales in their season opener. Though the first half started slowly for the Bucs, they pushed the pedal in the second half, scoring seven times in the fourth quarter, and went on to win, 19-7.

Inside The Numbers
Maritime
- Chilton Cabot, Quinn Mucha, and Ryan McDonough each scored three goals in the win. Freshman Camden Stern added two goals, and Chris Sullivan, Daniel Kane, Liam Cogavin, Mason McNulty, James Sullivan, Cooper McIntire, Cole Jenkins, and Joe Vricella all scored once.
- Kane, J. Sullivan, and freshman Sawyer McCutchen all had two assists in the game. Mucha, and freshmen Jayson Kelleher, Brady Hofeman, and Aiden Bengtson each had one helper.
- Jenkins led the Bucs in ground balls with nine, and on the faceoff, he won 15 of 20 he took.

- Jacob Tresser led the way for the Wildcats on offense with three goals. Four other players scored once.
- Tresser and Jack Davis recorded the only two assists in the loss for JWU.
- Tresser, Davis, and Thomas Haggerty each had four ground balls to lead their team.
- Defensively, Kahlil Stewart led the Wildcats with two caused turnovers.
- On the faceoff, Chase Dimeco won five of 11 faceoffs, and Haggerty won five of 16.
- In total, Johnson & Wales picked up 34 ground balls, was successful on 14 of 24 clearances, won 10 of 29 faceoffs, and took 33 total shots.
How It Happened
Maritime scored the first three goals of the game, two from Cabot and one from McIntire, before the Wildcats got on the board with a goal from Tresser to make the score 3-1 midway through the first quarter. The Bucs scored two more times in the first with goals from C. Sullivan and Vricella to take a 5-1 lead at the end of one.
In the second, Johnson & Wales scored three unanswered goals in the first three minutes of the quarter to pull within one goal. That was the closest the Wildcats got to the Buccaneers as Maritime scored four unanswered, from McDonough, Cabot, J. Sullivan, and Stern, to close out the first half with a 9-4 advantage.
JWU scored the first goal of the second half from the stick of Tresser to make it a 9-5 game, and then the Bucs scored three unanswered from Jenkins, Kane, and Mucha to jump out to a seven-goal, 12-5, lead at the end of three.
In the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers kept the momentum and dominated the final quarter of play with seven goals. McDonough scored the first, followed by Mucha, Stern, McDonough again, McNulty, Mucha again, and Cogavin. The Wildcats sprinkled in two goals from Greyson Doyle and Tresser. Maritime completed their wire-to-wire win over the Wildcats, 19-7.
