Baseball Eliminated from MASCAC Playoffs with Loss to Lancers

SALEM, Mass -- Buccaneer baseball entered the MASCAC Playoffs on Thursday as the sixth seed in the tournament. For their first round game, they drew the third-seeded Worcester State Lancers. The game was played at second-seeded Salem State. The Buccaneers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but were unable to hold on, giving up six in the third and four in the fifth innings, ultimately losing the game 14-11.

Inside The Numbers

  • Mason Bates and Derek De La Cruz had four hits in the win for the Lancers. Kevin Doyle tallied two hits, and Riggs Catlin, Alan Carpenter, Tyler Normandie, and Tad Giardina all had one hit.
  • De La Cruz hit a home run in the game, Doyle recorded a triple, and Bates had a double.
  • De La Cruz and Bates each drove in three runs. Normandie had two RBI, and Catlin, Doyle, Carpenter, and Giardina all drove in one.
  • Six players scored twice in the win, and Bates and Ryan Kewett scored once.
  • De La Cruz and Jewett each had a stolen base in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored early in the First Round of the MASCAC Playoffs, plating six runs in the top of the first inning against Price. Flynn knocked in two runs in the inning, and White, Loughren, Ramsey, and Logiudice all drove in one to put the Bucs up 6-0 after one inning.

Worcester put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a De La Cruz RBI single through the middle. Maritime led 6-1 through two.

In the top of the third, Duffy doubled to right field, driving in Bouffard. The Bucs extended their lead to six runs, 7-1. In the bottom of the third, the Lancers rallied for six runs to tie the game at 7-7. 

Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Worcester scored a run on a Bates single to give the Lancers an 8-7 advantage through four.

Maritime took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Kaczynski singled through the right side to score Duffy, and McCarthy singled to right field, bringing in Logiudice. The Bucs held a 9-8 lead. The Bucs' lead didn't last long, as the Lancers scored four times in the bottom of the fifth frame to take a 12-9 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, De La Cruz capped off the Worcester scoring with a solo home run to right field. The Lancers led after six, 13-9.

In the top of the ninth, the Buccaneers needed five runs to extend the first round, single-elimination game. They got two on a McCarthy two-RBI double to left center, but that was all they could muster. Worcester went on to win the game, 14-11.
