Buccaneers Lose Dogfight Against Dean

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers took on Dean College on Wednesday in Buzzards Bay, though they were the away team in the game. In another high-scoring game for BucBall, Maritime came up just short, 11-9.

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Jake Duffy went 3-3 at the plate to lead all players. Colsen LoughrenDamon WhiteCosta Beechin, and Kevin Heine each had a two-hit game. Michael LogiudiceNate Kaczynski, and Jason Bouffard all had one hit.
  • Duffy launched two home runs in the loss. Kaczynski and Loughren each recorded a double. 
  • Duffy drove in four runs in the game. Loughren knocked in two, and Beechin and Heine drove in one run each.
  • Duffy scored three times in the loss. Logiudice, Loughren, White, Beechin, Heine, and Bouffard all scored once.

Dean

  • Matthew Dutton recorded two hits in the win. Five other Bulldogs had a hit apiece. 
  • Dutton drove in two runs, and five others drove in one.
  • Luke Fahey and Colin Favata each hit a home run in the game.
  • Four players scored twice, and three others scored once. 
  • Kyler Lorenz and Colin Favata each stole a base.

 

How It Happened

Maritime struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on a Loughren double. Logiudice and Duffy scored to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead early. 

In the bottom of the second, Dean tied the game on a two-run home run from Favata. The sides were tied 2-2 at the end of two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Fahey hit his long ball to put the Bulldogs up for the first time in the game, 3-2. 

In the top of the fourth, Heine came in to score thanks to a rundown between first and second initiated by Eduardo Correia. The Bucs tied the game, 3-3. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Lorenz scored on a wild pitch to retake the lead, 4-3.

Duffy hit his first home run of the game in the top of the fifth, driving in two runs to change the lead in favor of Maritime again, 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Dean scored a handful of runs thanks to three errors by the Buccaneers' defense. Two came in on a two-error sequence, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Lorenz that brought in Dutton. Then, another error allowed Gavis Goss to score. The Bulldogs went back up, 8-5. 

The Bucs got one run back in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk of Duffy that scored Beechin. Maritime trailed after six, 8-6. 

In the top of the seventh, the Bucs scored twice to tie the game at 8-8. Beechin singled to bring in Loughren, and Heine hit a single to right, scoring white. Dean retook the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh, 11-8. They scored their three runs on a wild pitch and a Buccaneer error.

The Bucs got a run back on Duffy's second home run of the game in the top of the eighth, though that was all they would get back as the Bulldogs took an 11-9 win back to Franklin.

The Bucs travel to the North Shore on Friday to take on Gordon College at 3:30 pm.
