Loughren Drives in Two in Loss to Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass -- Baseball closed out its regular season conference slate on Tuesday with the rubber match of its three-game series with Westfield State. Historically, Maritime has had trouble at Westfield State, and Tuesday was no different, as the Bucs fell, 8-2, to the Owls.

Inside The Numbers

  • Sam Palmer, Colin Ryan, and Connor Benvenuto all had two hits in the win. Five other Owls had one hit in the game.
  • Chase Racine and Ryan each recorded a triple.
  • Racine and Ryan drove in two runs each. TJ May, Kaen Smith, and Benvenuto drove in one apiece.
  • Palmer, Racine, and May all scored twice. Nick Lenfest and Ryan scored once.
  • Lenfest stole two bases in the win. Palmer and Benvenuto stole one each.

 

How It Happened

Westfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Racine tripled to right, scoring two runs. Then, he scored on a wild pitch. Ryan followed Racine later in the inning with a triple of his own, driving in the fourth run of the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Owls tacked on three more runs. Palmer scored on an error by the Buccaneers. Ryan singled in a run, and Smith hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in one run. Westfield led 7-0 after three.

In the top of the fourth, the Bucs grabbed two runs back on a two-RBI single by Loughren that scored Kaczynski and McCarthy. Maritime trailed 7-2 through four. 

The Owls scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 8-2. They went on to win by that same score, taking the conference series, 2-1.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are scheduled to host Wentworth in non-conference play on Thursday at Hendy Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
