BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Baseball hosted Westfield State on Patriots Day for a conference doubleheader at Hendy Field. After struggling in game one, losing 7-5, the Bucs turned it around in game two, winning 10-5 in a hail-shortened game over the Owls.

 

Game One

How It Happened

Westfield took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI double from May.

In the top of the fourth, Scalise homered to right field to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, Scalise and Ryan drove in a run apiece, and the Owls led 5-0 through five.

Being no-hit, the Buccaneers manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth to erase the shutout for McNamara and the Owls. The Bucs trailed, 5-1, through six.

In the top of the seventh, the Owls scored two more runs on a Martin fielder's choice and now led 7-1. In the bottom of the inning, with McNamara out of the game after pitching six no-hit innings, the Buccaneers got to the Westfield bullpen for four runs. Duffy hit a three-run home run, then McCarthy hit an RBI single. With the score at 7-5, the Buccaneers got the tying run on base but were unable to erase the deficit, losing game one, 7-5.

How It Happened

Much like game one, Westfield took a lead in the top of the first, scoring three runs. In the bottom of the inning, Kaczynski homered to right field, driving in two. The Owls led, 3-2, after one.

After a scoreless second inning, the Owls extended their lead back to three runs, 5-2, thanks to a two-run single off the bat of Lucas. In the bottom of the inning, Maritime pulled within one run with two runs of their own. Duffy scored on a wild pitch, and McCarthy singled in Kaczynski. The Bucs trailed by one run, 5-4, after three. 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Buccaneers got to the Owls' bullpen for a second straight game. White was hit by a pitch, driving in Logiudice to tie the game, and from there the Buccaneers went on a scoring spree, getting six total runs in the inning. Kaczynski scored on a wild pitch, Bouffard was walked with the bases loaded, Beechin hit a two-RBI single through the right side, and Duffy hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Bouffard to score. When it was all said and done, the Bucs led 10-5.

In the top of the sixth, the Buccaneers and Wooley recorded two outs before the skies opened up, and it began hailing on Hendy Field. After some time, the field was deemed unsafe, and the game was called in favor of the Bucs, 10-5.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel to Fitchburg on Wednesday to take on the Falcons in the final game of the three-game series between the teams at 3 pm.
