Deveau and Naar Score Four Time Each in Loss to Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass -- Women's lacrosse took on Fitchburg State on the road in conference play on Friday evening. The Buccaneers surged for five goals in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback against the Falcons as they lost, 16-10.

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Karah Deveau and Sarah Naar led all players in the game with four goals apiece. Erin Cardinal and Tessa Hinds each scored once.
  • Cardinal, Deveau, and Taylor Barnett were credited with assists in the loss.
  • Rech tied for the game-high with four ground balls.
  • Deveau had a team-high five draw controls.
  • Defensively, Rech led the Bucs with two caused turnovers.

  • Reese Curtis and Hannah Azzari had four ground balls in the win. 
  • Chiacchia won 10 draw controls to lead all players.
  • Defensively, Mackenzie Alicea caused three turnovers in the game.
  • In total, Fitchburg picked up 21 ground balls, was successful on six of eight clearances, won 19 draw controls, and took 37 shots in the win.

 

How It Happened

Fifthburg came out strong in the first quarter, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game, and added a sixth unanswered goal six minutes later at 3:33. Down 6-0, the Buccaneers got goals from Naar and Deveau before the end of the quarter to cut the Falcons lead to four goals, 6-2, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Naar scored her second on a free position shot to make the score 6-3.  Fitchburg opened the lead back to four goals, 7-3, at the 11:37 mark. Naar scored her third of the half on a power play at 5:57. The Falcons scored two more before the halftime break, and led 9-4 heading to the locker room.

In the third, Fitchburg outscored the Bucs, 5-1, with the Buccaneers getting a fourth goal in the game from Naar. Fitchburg led 14-5 heading to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Hinds opened the scoring to bring the score to 14-6. Chiacchia scored for the Falcons, then the Buccaneers went on a four-goal run, with three power-play goals from Deveau and a full-strength goal from Cardinal, assisted by Deveau, and the Bucs were down five goals with only 20 seconds to play. Fitchburg added one more goal for good measure with six seconds left and went on to win the MASCAC contest, 16-10.
