Naar Scores Three in Buccaneers Loss to Corsairs

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass -- In their first road game of the season, women's lacrosse took on UMass Dartmouth at Cressy Field in Dartmouth. The Buccaneers got three goals from Sarah Naar but came up short, falling to 0-2 on the season after an 18-6 final.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Sarah Naar led the Buccaneers in the game with three goals. Sabrina Andrews and Maggie O'Malley scored once, their first collegiate goals, and Brady Deschamps scored as well. 
  • Erin Cardinal recorded her first-career assist in the game, the only assist recorded by the Bucs.
  • Andrews picked up a game-high four ground balls. 
  • Deschamps won three draw controls to lead the team.
  • Defensively, Rech led the way with two caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 21 ground balls, was successful on 15 of 19 clearances, and took 17 shots in the game.

UMass Dartmouth

  • Maddy Allen scored a game-high five goals. Emma Terino added four for the hosts.
  • Cat Whitehouse led the team with four assists in the win.
  • Bushey picked up a team-high three ground balls.
  • Terino won 17 draw controls for the Corsairs.
  • Defensively, Allen caused three turnovers.
  • In total, UMass Dartmouth picked up 13 ground balls, was successful on 12 of 16 clearances, and took 35 shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Corsairs scored the first three goals of the game in just over three minutes to take a 3-0 lead early in the first. Andrews scored the first Buccaneers goal at 6:33 of the first, the first of her career. Maritime made it two in a row on O'Malley's first collegiate goal on Cardinal's first assists. That made the score 3-2 at the end of one. 

In the second, Dartmouth scored first at 10:08 to make it a 4-2 game. Then, Naar scored her first to get back within one. The Corsairs grabbed the momentum from there, scoring four unanswered to take an 8-3 lead late in the first half. Naar scored her second with just over a minute left in the second quarter to make the score 8-4 going to the break.

Dartmouth opened the third with two goals, both on the power play. Deschamps then scored her first of the season on a power play for the Buccaneers. UMD scored one more time in the third from a free position shot to give them a six-goal, 11-5 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Dartmouth scored seven times while the Buccaneers got a third goal on the night from Naar. The Corsairs went on to win the game, 18-6.

The Buccaneers are off to Maine to take on Maine Maritime on Saturday in the Admiral's Cup at 2 pm.
