Bucs Get Three Goals from Naar in Loss to Vikings

SALEM, Mass -- Women's lacrosse began the conference portion of its schedule Saturday on the road at Salem State. Though the Buccaneers took an early 3-0 lead, they couldn't hold off the Vikings, who went on to win the game, 15-5.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Sarah Naar scored three times in the loss. It was her fourth game with three or more goals on the season.
  • Karah Deveau scored her first goal of the season in the game after returning from injury. 
  • Maggie O'Malley scored one goal for the Bucs.
  • Deveau led the Buccaneers in ground balls with five and in draw controls with four. 
  • Defensively, Rech and Naar led the team with two caused turnovers each.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 34 ground balls, was successful on eight of 25 clearances, won nine draw controls, and took 16 shots in the game.

Salem State

  • Jordan Turcotta led all scorers with six goals in the win. Laura Young and Kaylee Rich scored three apiece. Aislinn Bennett scored twice, and Olivia Tednes netted one.
  • Bennett and Young each had two assists in the game. Turcotte and Tednes had one.
  • Bennett led the Vikings with seven ground balls. 
  • Turcotte was the game leader in draw controls with six.
  • Defensively, Bennett had three caused turnovers.
  • In total, Salem picked up 35 ground balls, was successful on 10 of 15 clearances, won 13 draw controls, and took 37 total shots.

How It Happened

Maritime scored first in the game, midway through the quarter, when Naar scored her first of the game. Less than 30 seconds later, Deveau scored her first of the season to put the Bucs up 2-0. Shortly after, Naar scored her second, giving Maritime a 3-0 advantage. In the last 4:47 of the quarter, Salem scored two to get within one, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Salem's defense shut down the Buccaneers, and their offense went on to score six unanswered in the quarter, extending their scoring streak to eight goals going back to the first quarter. The Vikings held an 8-3 lead at the break.

Each team scored one goal in the third quarter, the first coming from Salem. Bennett scored at 12:32, and 10 minutes later, O'Malley scored for the Buccaneers to end the scoring streak by the hosts at nine, and make the score 9-4 heading to the fourth. 

Naar scored first in the final quarter of play, 45 seconds in, to make the score 9-5. That was the Bucs' last goal as Salem went on to score six and earn a 15-5 victory over Maritime in MASCAC play.
