Buc Ball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Against Vikings to Win Conference Series

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- After dropping the opening game of the conference series against Salem State on Friday on the road, the Buccaneers swept another Saturday in MASCAC play on Saturday with exciting 5-2, and 8-7 wins over the Vikings

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Jake Boucher had two hits in the loss. Ethan Stepputtis, Yabdriel Gonzalez, and Ryan Bourgeois had one hit.
  • Owen Duggan and Michael Buccaro both drove in a run.
  • Boucher and Connor Dolan scored the two Vikings runs.

 

How It Happened

Duggan hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to score Boucher and give Salem a 1-0 lead early.

In the top of the third, Buccaro hit a sacrifice fly of his own to bring in Dolan and extend the Viking lead to two runs, 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Velzis hit a solo home run to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, after four.

The Buccaneers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and take the lead. Pietrafesa singled to right field and brought in Houston to score, tying the game, 2-2. Loughren then singled through the middle of the infield, bringing in Cole and Pietrafesa, giving the Buccaneers a two-run lead, 4-2. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Cole walked with the bases loaded, and Logiudice came in to score the Bucs fifth run of the game. 

Dean faced four hitters in the top of the seventh, retiring three of them, and the Bucs took game one of the day, 5-2.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Evan Vieira led all players with three hits in the win for the Bucs. Aaron Cole and Brett Velzis had two hits, and AJ Pietrafesa and Colsen Loughren had one.
  • Velzis drove in four runs in the game. Loughren knocked in two, and Cole and Pietrafesa drove in one.
  • Vieira scored three times, Pietrafesa came in to score twice, and Velzis, Jake Houston, and Loughren scored once.
  • Velzis and Loughren both had a home run in the game. Vieira and Velzis both had a double.

Salem

  • Jake Boucher, Yabdriel Gonzalez, and Dylan Adamson had two hits in the loss. Connor Dolan, Owen Duggan, Nolan Currier, Brayden Michaelson, and Ryan Bourgeois had one.
  • Dolan, Gonzalex, and Adamson drove in two runs. Boucher added one RBI.
  • Bourgeois scored twice. Boucher, Duggan, Ethan Stepputtis, Gonzalez, and Adamson scored once.
  • Boucher, Bourgeois, and Adamson all had a double.
  • Stepputtis stole a bag for the Vikings.

 

How It Happened

Velzis put the Buccaneers on the board first in the bottom of the first with an RBI double that brought in Pietrafesa to score. Maritime led 1-0 after one inning.

In the top of the second, Salem tied the game on an RBI double from Adamson that brought in Bourgeois, and the teams were tied, 1-1, after two innings.

Salem exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-1 lead. Gonzalez knocked in two runs with a single to right. Adamson followed with an RBI single through the middle of the infield. Boucher doubled in Bourgeois, and Dolan singled through the middle to bring in two more runs. The Buccaneers didn't go away easily as Velzis hit his second home run of the day, of the three-run variety, in the bottom of the third, and pulled the Bucs back within three runs, 7-4, after the third inning.

The Salem bats went cold after the third inning, and the Buccaneers slowly worked their way back. They started with a run in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Cole, scoring Vieira. The Bucs were down two runs, 7-5, after five.

In the sixth, Loughren tied the game with a two-run home run, scoring himself and Houston. Then, Pietrafesa reached on a fielder's choice and Vieira scored on a Viking error to give the Buccaneers an 8-7 lead, their first lead since the first inning. 

In the top of the sixth, Wolley walked the bases loaded. With the game on the line, Stepputti hit a deep fly ball to left field. Damon White wasn't letting Salem take the lead as he leaped to the top of the fence and robbed the potential grand slam to finish the game. The Bucs took the game, 8-7, swept the doubleheader, and won the series over Salem, two games to one.

The Buccaneers continue their conference series with Bridgewater State on Monday in Bridgewater with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
