Six Buccaneers Named to All-MASCAC Teams
WESTFIELD, Mass -- The MASCAC announced its 2025 baseball All-Conference teams on Wednesday afternoon, which includes six Buccaneer representatives. MASCAC Player of the Year Brett Velzis and Pitcher of the Year Hunter Dean have been selected to the first team, while AJ Pietrafesa, Colsen Loughren, Sam Huffman, and Michael Estrada earned second team selections.
Along with being named conference Player of the Year, Brett Velzis was voted to the first team as the third baseman. This season, Velzis has played in 39 games, setting career-highs in batting average (.433), on-base percentage (.541), home runs (11), doubles (13), RBI (56), walks (28), and slugging percentage (.817). He reset the single-season home run record, which he set with nine in 2023, with the 11 home runs in 2025. He also broke the single-season program records for RBI with 56 and counting heading into the MASCAC playoffs.
In his career, he has played in 155 games, compiled a program record 187 hits, a program record 42 doubles, a program record 32 home runs, a program record 164 RBI, and is tied for the program record in hit by pitch with 24.
For Velzis, this is his fourth All-Conference selection, his first team honor.
Hunter Dean earns his second spot on the All-MASCAC first team after earning second-team honors in 2024.
Dean appeared in and started 10 games this season for Maritime. He finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and a 4.50 ERA. Hunter pitched 62 innings, compiled 87 strikeouts with only 19 walks, and tossed seven complete games. Dean broke the program single-season record with his 87 strikeouts and has tied the single-season wins record with six.
In conference play, Dean led the MASCAC with a perfect 6-0 record and 54 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched.
AJ Pietrafesa makes his way onto an All-MASCAC team for the third time in his career, having earned second team honors in 2023, first team honors in 2024, and now a second team selection in 2025. Pietrafesa batted .341 during the regular season this year and posted a .445 on-base percentage. He drove in 16 runs, walked 20 times, hit three doubles, had 44 hits, and scored a career-best 31 times.
While AJ's offense had been instrumental to the Buccaneers success, it's the first baseman's defensive abilities that shine. In 2025, he committed just two errors in 264 total chances, helped turn 16 double plays, and posted a .992 fielding percentage.
Freshman Colsen Loughren made his presence known in the MASCAC in his debut season for the Buccaneers and picked up a second-team nod for his efforts. Having played in 30 games in his freshman campaign, Loughren posted a .379 batting average with a .431 on-base percentage. The Buccaneer backstop recorded six home runs, five doubles, drove in 36 runs, walked 10 times, had 36 hits, and scored 18 times. In 112 plate appearances this season, Colsen struck out a mere 17 times. Behind the plate, he threw out seven runners and posted a .988 fielding percentage.
Sam Huffman was outstanding on the mound for the Buccaneers this year, earning himself a spot on the All-MASCAC second team. Huffman went 7-1 in the regular season with a 3.06 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched. In those 50 innings, a career-high, he walked only 14 hitters. This was by far Sam's best season since his freshman campaign, when he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.86 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched.
Michael Estrada claimed the Designated Hitter spot on the All-MASCAC second team, his second All-Conference nod after making the first team in 2024. This season, Estrada hit a career-high seven home runs, five doubles, a triple, drove in 24 runs, scored 26 times, and stole seven bases for the Bucs. Though he hit .250 on the year, his impact on the Buccaneers offense was immense.
