Buccaneers Split Home Opening Doubleheader with Chargers
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Bucs baseball team played their home opener on Sunday in a doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer at Hendy Field. Maritime had a tough go in game one losing to the Chargers 17-3 and turned it around in game two to split the doubleheader with a 14-7 win.

How It Happened
The Chargers controlled the scoring throughout the game though they didn't put their first runs on the board until the top of the third inning. They scored seven times in the third to take a 7-0 lead and extended that lead to 11 runs in the fourth inning. They scored two more in the top of the fifth to make it a 13-0 advantage.
The Buccaneers crossed the plate for the first time in the bottom of the fifth on a Weir single that brought in Vieira to score to make it 13-1. Maritime added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 13-3 after six.
In the top of the seventh, Colby-Sawyer added some insurance with four runs to take a 17-3 lead that went on to be the final score in game one.

How It Happened
Maritime struck first in game two with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Velzis to drive in Cole.
In the bottom of the third, the Bucs scored five more times, two on a Loughren Double, two on an Estrada batted ball that was booted by the Charger defense, and another on a Logiudice single to bring in Estrada.
Colby-Sawyer struck in the top of the fourth on a Montalvo single to make the score 6-1. In the bottom of the frame, Velzis drove in Cole again, this time on a double to bring the Bucs advantage to 7-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Chargers scored three times to make the score 7-4.
The Bucs scored again in the bottom of the sixth, again on a Velzis double, then on a Loughren single, another on Beechin's triple and one more on an Estrada ground out. Then, Cole singled to drive in two more and make the score 14-4.
In the top of the seventh, the Chargers scored three times on Wheeler's home run to cut the Bucs lead to seven, 14-7. Maritime held on from there to earn the 14-7 win over the Chargers and split the doubleheader.
What's Next
The Buccaneers are back home on Monday to take on Brandeis in a non-conference doubleheader at Hendy Field.
