Kosiewicz Scores Four in One-Goal Loss to Lyons

NORTON, Mass -- The Buccaneers faced off against former NEWMAC foe Wheaton College on Tuesday night in non-conference play. A tight game the whole way, and the Lyons edged out the Bucs by one goal when it was all said and done, 18-17.

  • Mitch Tepedino scored four goals in the win. Mike McLaughlin, Jack Board, and Emmett Edwards scored three for the hosts. Evan Paturzo and Charlie Goodrich scored twice, and Theo Stamatel added one.
  • McLaughlin and Goodrich recorded four assists in the game. Will Durkee and Edwards had two helpers. Paturzo had an assist as well.

How It Happened

Maritime opened the game with a three-goal unanswered streak in less than three minutes. McDonough scored first, followed by Barrett and Vricella. Wheaton scored at the 11:34 mark to cut the Bucs lead to two goals, 3-1. Cabot and Sullivan added back-to-back goals for the Bucs, and they had a commanding 5-1 lead midway through the first quarter. The Lyons went on to score three in a row in under 90 seconds, cutting the deficit to one goal, 5-4. McDonough scored again for the Bucs at 2:12 of the first to open the lead back to two goals, 6-4. At 1:41 and 1:02, Board and Stamatel scored for the hosts to tie the game with a minute left in the opening quarter. With 18 seconds to go, Mucha netted a goal to give Maritime a one-goal lead, 7-6, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Wheaton scored first and second to take their first lead of the game, 8-7 halfway through the quarter. Barrett and Mucha scored back-to-back four minutes apart to go up 9-8 with just over three minutes to play in the half. With just under two minutes to play in the second, Paturzo scored for the Lyons to tie the game. The teams went to the break tied, 9-9.

The Buccaneers scored 26 seconds into the third quarter to take a 10-9 lead, thanks to a Barrett goal. Kosiewicz scored 54 seconds later to put the Bucs up two goals, 11-9. McLaughlin scored for the Lyons at 8:06 of the quarter to cut it to an 11-10 score. Two minutes later, Cabot scored to make it 12-10. In the last five minutes of the third, Wheaton scored twice to tie the game at 12-12 heading to the fourth.

In a barn burner of a game, the two teams weren't done yet. Wheaton took a lead less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Buccaneers tied the game on McIntire's goal and then proceeded to score three more to extend their unanswered streak to four goals and took a 16-13 lead with 7:41 left in regulation. Wheaton got two goals back at 7:09 and 6:12 to make it a one-score game, 16-15. Kosiewicz scored his fourth goal with 5:58 left on the clock, giving Maritime a 17-15 advantage. In the final five minutes, the Lyons got two goals from McLaughlin and one from Tepedino to tie the game and ultimately take the lead, 18-17. The Bucs had their chances in the last two minutes and could not capitalize, losing to the Lyons by the same 18-17 final score.

The Buccaneers are home on Saturday at 10 am against VTSU Castleton for Senior Day at Clean Harbors Stadium for the three Buccaneers seniors on the roster.
