Bucs Stay Undefeated with win over Valiants

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Buccaneers men's lacrosse squad traveled to New York for a non-conference matinee matchup with the Manhattanville Valiants on Wednesday. When all was said and done, the Bucs remained undefeated on the season picking up a 21-11 victory.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Quinn Mucha scored a game-high five goals in the win for Maritime. 
  • LEC Rookie of the Week, Jame Sullivan, added four goals for the Bucs, and Ryan McDonough and Daniel Kane scored three times.
  • Cooper Barrett and Braeden Kosiwicz each scored twice while Chilton Cabot and Joe Vricella scored one apiece. 
  • Kane, Barrett, and McDonough led all players with three assists each in the game. Mucha, Sullivan, Brian Rosher, Cabot, and Kyle Shanahan all had one helper.
  • Kane led all players with eight ground balls for the Bucs. 
  • Rosher won 19-of-32 faceoffs in the game.
  • Defensively, Sullivan caused a game-high three turnovers.

Manhattanville

  • Sean Larkin led the Valiants with four goals. Dom Janavey added three scores in the loss. Tyler Berch scored twice and Jake Strobel and Drew Palladino had a goal apiece.
  • Larkin and Palladino had two assists each to lead the Valiants. Janavey and Strobel both had one.
  • Nick Padovani and Matt Bundy picked up a team-high five ground balls. 
  • Padovani won 13-of-28 faceoffs for Manhattanville.
  • Defensively, Dominic Russell caused a team-high two turnovers.
  • In total, Manhattanville picked up 35 ground balls, was successful on 21-of-27 clears, won 16-of-36 faceoffs, and took 44 shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The hosts took the early lead in the game on a Larkin goal 36 seconds in. Kane tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:24 mark of the first quarter and the teams remained tied until Janavey's first goal at 7:58 to give the Vals their second lead early on. In the final 5:36 of the first, the Buccaneers took over the game and with goals from Kane, Mucha, and Vricella, took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.

Manhattanville scored first in the second quarter to cut the Bucs lead to one goal, 4-3. After that Valiant goal, the Bucs took the momentum again and kept their hosts off the board for the remainder of the quarter while scoring three goals of their own. McDonough, Cabot, and Mucha all scored in the final eight minutes of the half and the Buccaneers led by four goals, 7-3, at the halftime break. 

Maritime had an offensive explosion in the third quarter and began running away with the game. In the first 7:15 of the third, the Bucs scored five times to extend their advantage to 12-3. Janavey then scored for the Valiants to run the score to 12-4 and Kosiewicz got the goal back for the Bucs to make it 13-4. The teams went back and forth again with goals, first from Strobel for Manhattanville, then another from Mucha. The Valiants closed out the third quarter with three straight goals and trailed Maritime by six, 14-8, at the end of three.

In the final quarter of play, Maritime scored seven more times, but not before Manhattanville scored the first three goals, and their only three goals, of the quarter. The Bucs ended the game with a 7-0 run to win the road non-conference game by a final of 21-11 over the Valiants.
