Buccaneers and Colonels Split in Milton

MILTON, Mass -- With their conference schedule wrapped up, Bucs softball traveled to Curry College on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Colonels. Though the Bucs struggled in game one, losing 11-2, they bounced back in game two, splitting the twinbill with a 12-9 victory.

Curry

  • Morgan Barmash recorded three hits in the win. Cailene Dupras, Ana Tsonis, and Renee Gonneville all had two hits. Kailey Collins-Fiore, Katie Tobin, and Emma Burke all had one hit.
  • Tsonis hit a home run in the game, Gonneville added a triple, Dupras hit two doubles, and Barmash recorded a double.
  • Tsonis drove in four runs. Barmash and Gonneville drove in two each, and Tobin and Karlie Pontes drove in one run each.
  • Five players scored twice, and Morgan Saraceno scored once.
  • Saraceno recorded a stolen base in the game.

 

How It Happened

Booker put the Buccaneers in the lead in the top of the first with her two-run home run over the center field fence. Curry answered with one run in the bottom of the frame. Maritime led after one inning, 2-1.

In the third, Curry tied the game at 2-2 on a squeeze play by Pontes that scored Saraceno. 

The game remained 2-2 through the fourth and the top of the fifth. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Curry scored five times to take a 7-2 lead. 

In the sixth, the Colonels put the game away when Tsonis hit a grand slam to end the game by run-rule, 11-2.

In the game, Klemp recorded her 200th career strikeout, becoming the first player in program history to reach the mark.

Maritime

  • Abbey Doherty led the Bucs with four hits in the game. Kelsey Booker and Eva Warren each recorded three base knocks. Ab'c'de Patane and Sarah Holler had two hits apiece, and Reagan KereczHannah Burton, and Natalie Gale all had one.
  • Patane hit a home run, the 20th of her career. Booker and Doherty each hit two doubles, and Warren and Gale each had one.
  • Booker drove in four runs. Patane, Holler, and Doherty each drove in two. Carlee Hiddeman and Gale knocked in one apiece.
  • Kerecz, Booker, and Patane all scored three times. Warren came in two score twice, and Burton scored once.
  • Kerecz, Doherty, and Warren all stole a base in the win. For Kerecz, it was her program leading 50th of her career.

Curry

  • Isabella Monsanto had two hits in the loss. Eight other Colonels hitters recorded one hit.
  • Cailene Dupras, Ana Tsonis, and Lindsay DesRoberts each hit a home run in the game. Olivia Roy added a double.
  • DesRoberts drove in two runs, and six other Curry hitters drove in one run.
  • Nine different base runners scored in the loss.

 

How It Happened

Curry too ka 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They scored their first run on a Dupras home run. Their second run came in on a fielder's choice, and the third on a bunt single. 

In the top of the second, Maritime answered with one run on a Doherty double that scored Patane. Curry led 3-1 after two. 

The Buccaneers tied the game and took the lead in the top of the third, scoring four times. Booker walked with the bases loaded, scoring Warren to make the score 3-2. Then, Holler singled to center field, driving in Kerecz and Burton to give the Bucs a 4-3 advantage. Doherty added to the lead with an RBI double, bringing in Booker to score. Maritime led 5-3. In the bottom of the inning, Tsonis hit her second home run of the day to pull Curry within one, 5-4. 

The Bucs extended the lead back to two runs in the top of the fourth when Booker doubled in Kerecz. Maritime led by two, 6-4.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Curry flipped the script, scoring four times to take their second lead of the game, 8-6. An RBI single, followed by an RBI double, tied the game at 6-6. Then, DesRoberts hit a two-run home run to give the hosts the lead, 8-6.

The Bucs weren't done yet, though, as in the top of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, Hiddemen hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Booker. That made the score 8-7 Curry. With two outs, Gale stepped to the plate. Coming into the at-bat, she was 0-3 in the game. She proceeded to rip a double down the right field line and bring in Patane to score, tying the game at 8-8, and effectively sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Booker doubled again, this time driving in Kerecz and Warren to give the Bucs a 10-8 advantage. Patane put the cherry on top, hitting a two-run home run to put the Bucs up four runs, 12-8. In the bottom of the eighth, Curry got one run back, but it wasn't enough. The Buccaneers went on to win the extra-inning thriller, 12-9.

The Bucs are back home for a pair of games against UMass Boston on Wednesday, beginning at 4 pm.
