Johnston Named to AFCA All-American Second Team

WACO, TEXAS – Wednesday morning the American Football Coaches Association announced their 2019 Division III Coach's All-America teams. After earning MASCAC All-Conference First Team and New England Football Writer's All-New England honors Buccaneer senior defensive lineman Kyle Johnston (Raynham, Mass) has been named to the AFCA All-America Second Team. Johnston becomes the first football All-American at Massachusetts Maritime Academy since William Linke earned the honor in 1999 and is the second Buccaneer to earn the All-American title in 2019 as fellow defensive lineman Colin McCabe (Dartmouth, Mass) earned the title in the spring in track & field.

The Raynham native totaled 164 tackles, 25.5 sacks, 49.5 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in his career at the Academy, with his numbers getting better year after year.

In 2019 Kyle racked up 12.5 sacks, a MASCAC high and fifth best in the nation. He tied for second in conference with 19.5 tackles for loss, forced a league-high three fumbles and tallied 57 total tackles. All of those numbers are career highs for the Buccaneer defensive end and helped earn him the title of All-American.

The AFCA has selected All-American teams since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five divisions of college football. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best – the coaches themselves.
