Bucs Buck Broncos in Southern Clash

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Buccaneers softball team played on Friday for the second day in South Carolina against the Broncos of Suny Delhi. Coming off of two wins on Thursday, the Bucs kept the winning ways going with a doubleheader sweep of the Broncos, 13-6, and 12-3.

 

Game One

The Basics

Final: Buccaneers 13, Broncos 6

Maritime

  • Lillian RossKelsey BookerHannah Burton, and Klemp each had three hits in the win. Reagan Kerecz and Eva Warren added two apiece. Sarah Holler and Natalie Gale had one hit each.
  • Booker recorded two doubles and Holler had one in the win. 
  • Booker drove in three runs while Burton and Klemp each drove in two. Kerecz, Holler, and Rubi Butler each had one RBI.
  • Ross led the Bucs in runs scored with three and Hollers, Burton, and Klemp all scored twice. Kerecz, Booker, Gale, and Warren all scored once.
  • Kerecz and Gale both had a stolen base in the game.

Delhi

  • Hannah Caughey and Sidney Cooper each had two-hit games in the loss. Danielle Seymour, Kayleigh Allen, Riley Martin, Samantha Martin, Julian Ponce, and Jaden Taylor all had one hit.
  • Riley Martin led the Broncos with two RBI and Seymour, Cooper, Allen, and Taylor all had one driven in.
  • Cayla Moroni scored twice in the loss with Caughey, Cooper, Stephanie Huckabee, and Allen all coming in to score once.
  • Taylor had a triple and Samantha Martin had a double to account for the Delhi extra-base hits.
  • Cooper had a lone stolen base for the Broncos.

 

How It Happened

The Broncos scored early getting three runs in the bottom of the first after blanking the Bucs in the top of the inning. Seymour singled in Moroni for the first run of the game followed by a Riley Martin single that brought in Huckabee and Cooper to make it 3-0 Delhi after an inning of play.

After a scoreless second, the Bucs got two runs back in the third when Booker singled through the left side driving in one run and another scoring on an error by Delhi. After three, Maritime trailed, 3-2.

In the top of the fourth, the Bucs took their first and last lead as they plated six runs in the inning. The first run was Burton who scored on a Kerecz sacrifice fly to left field. Ross followed that up by reaching on an error that allowed Warren and Klemp to score to give the Bucs a 5-3 lead. Booke doubled down the left field line to bring in Ross which Holler followed up with a double of her own to score Booker. The final run of the inning came in on a Burton infield single that Holler scored on and the Bucs led 8-3 after four. 

The fifth inning was uneventful for both teams and then the Bucs extended their lead in the sixth. Butler walked with the bases loaded scoring Holler and Klemp singled to bring in Burton and Gale, giving the Bucs an 11-3 advantage. Delhi got a run back in the bottom of the sixth frame on a Taylor triple that scored Allen and extended the game as the Broncos were facing a mercy rule loss until that point. 

Up 11-4, Maritime added some insurance in the top of the seventh. Booker doubled again and drove in Kerecz then, Burton singled to center field and drove in Ross giving the Bucs a 13-4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Broncos cut into the lead again in the final inning with two runs. Cooper reached on an error that allowed Moroni to score and Allen grounded out to shortstop and Caughey touched home to make the score 13-6. Klemp went on to finish off the inning and earn the Bucs their third win of the season and first win of the day against SUNY Delhi.

Maritime

  • Angelina Dickel, Carolina Watson, and Riley Martin had the only three hits of the game for the Broncos. 
  • Dickel and Hannah Coughey each had an RBI
  • Kayleigh Allen, Watson, and Martin scored the three runs in the loss. 
  • Martin had a double, the only extra-base hit of the game for Delhi. 
  • Ferrara had the only stolen base of the game for either team.

 

How It Happened

As in game one, the Broncos took the early lead in game two when they scored in the top of the first. Delhi too ka 1-0 lead on a Caughey ground out to second that allowed Allen to score. This time, the lead did not last as long for Delhi as it did in game one as the Bucs struck for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Holler tripled to center field driving in Ross and she scored on the play after a throw to third went out of play. Whitman followed that up with her first hit in a Bucs uniform to drive in two runs, Burton and Gale. The Buccaneers led 4-1 after one inning of play.

In the top of the third, the Broncos got a run back when Caughey reached on an error and Martin scored on the error. In the bottom of the inning, Whitman struck again with a double that scored Burton. Catlett then singled up the middle to drive in Whitman and the Bucs led 6-2. The inning continued for Maritime and they scored another on a Ross single to left then one more on a Booker single to center that drove in Kerecz. The Buccaneers held a six-run, 8-2, lead after three.

The Bucs extended their lead again in the bottom of the fourth scoring four more runs. The first came on another Catlett single scoring Gale, the second on a bases-loaded walk of Kerecz that brought in Burton, the third run came in on a Ross single that scored Catlett and Butler drove in the final run of the inning on a ground out to second with the bases loaded. The Bucs led 12-2 after four.

In the fifth, the Broncos got one run back on a Dickel single to score Watson and it wasn't enough to extend the game as Maritime earned the 12-3 win in five innings over the Broncos with Catlett allowing just three hits in the game.

 

What's Next

The Bucs are back on the diamond in South Carolina on Sunday for two games, the first against St. Elizabeth at 9am and their final game down south against Lancaster Bible at 1pm.
