FRAMINGHAM, Mass – The Buccaneers took on the Rams Wednesday night on the road in a big MASCAC match. Holding on to the final spot in the conference playoffs by a string, the Bucs were unable to take down FSU, losing in straight sets. The loss drops them out of the playoffs for the time being as MCLA jumped Maritime, beating Framingham, the lone win for the Bucs on the season, out in western Mass.
For Maritime, junior Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) led the team offensively with seven kills, as well as leading the team, and the match, defensively with 11 digs. Sophomore, Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) had two service aces in the match, the only two for the visitors. Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) racked up 11 assists for the Bucs offensively.
The Rams Brandee Thomas led both teams with 16 kills in the three sets. Mackenzie Whalen assists on 19 different occasions to lead the match with Morgan Failla adding 11 of her own. Whalen also tied Harrison for the match high in digs with 11.
Framingham never trailed in any of the three sets. In set one they sew themselves out to a 10-point lead early in the game, winning 25-10. In set two, Maritime kept it close at the beginning but the Rams ran away with the set following a 4-4 tie, going on a 21-9 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Set three was more of the same from 15-10 Framingham State, though they did allow the most Buccaneer points in the deciding set, 18. They took the third set by a 25-18 score to win the match in straight sets.
The loss drops the Buccaneers to 1-17 on the season, 1-5 in the MASCAC. The Rams improve to 15-10, 4-2 in conference.
The Buccaneers have three matches left in the season. They will be away at Dean College on Saturday, October 20th, at Pine Manor on Tuesday, October 23rd and then will return home for Senior night and a pivotal game against MCLA on Friday, October 26th at 7pm. The winner of that final match will secure the sixth and final spot in to the MASCAC playoffs.
