BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team began its 2017 season with solid performances in several events at the non-scoring all-divisions Bridgewater State Bears Invitational that took place in chilly conditions Saturday afternoon on the Swenson Track.
Junior Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) recorded a ninth place finish in the shot put on the women’s side for the Buccaneers with a mark of 10.90 meters (35 feet, 9 ¼ inches), and she added a 14th place performance in the javelin with a mark of 31.17 meters (102 feet, 3 inches). Freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) finished ninth in the 400 meter hurdles in her inaugural collegiate competition in a time of 1:23.74.
On the men’s side, junior Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.) finished 10th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.68 for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a 10th place performance in the triple jump of 11.16 meters (36 feet, 7 ¾ inches) from freshman Jack Koss (Falmouth, Mass.). The Buccaneer 4 x 100 meter relay team consisting of Chester, junior Joe Eastman (Hanover, Mass.) and freshmen Aaron Diauto (Pembroke, Mass.) and Frank Mesa (Hialeah, Fla.) placed sixth in a time of 47.49, while the 4 x 400 meter relay squad consisting of senior Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.), junior Chris Mackay (Bethany, Conn.), sophomore Kevin Donato (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Steven Savoy (West Bridgewater, Mass.) finished ninth with a time of 3:56.98.
Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic that begins at 11:00 a.m.
