MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME OFFSHORE SAILING
Navy MacMillan Cup Regatta
Sunday, October 23, 2016
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team took advantage of ideal conditions to notch a fourth place finish at the prestigious Navy MacMillan Cup Regatta on Sunday afternoon on Chesapeake Bay, as the result qualifies the Buccaneers to return to Annapolis in two weeks for the Navy John F. Kennedy Cup that is considered the national championship of offshore sailing.
After gusty conditions forced the cancellation of the opening day of competition on Saturday, Massachusetts Maritime was greeted to 15-20 knot breezes that created perfect sailing conditions. The Buccaneers finished fourth overall in the three Sunday races, as the host Midshipmen took top honors and Coast Guard followed in the runner-up spot. SUNY-Maritime finished in third ahead of Massachusetts Maritime, while Merchant Marine and Maine Maritime were next in the respective fifth and sixth place positions.
Seniors Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.), George Luber (North Redington Beach, Fla.), Christopher Mannka (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), along with sophomores Evan Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.), McKenna Jarvis (Dedham, Mass.) and Matthew Schaefer (Stratford, Conn.), comprised the Buccaneer crew for this weekend’s event.
