MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME SAILING
Great Herring Pond Open
Saturday-Sunday, October 15-16, 2016

BOURNE, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team used strong performances in extremely windy conditions on the final day of competition to take top honors at the Great Herring Pond Open over the weekend at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center.
Freshman Alex Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.), junior Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Catherine Haines (East Haddam, Conn.) comprised the Buccaneer “A” crew for the weekend, while junior Jeffrey Adam (Newport, R.I.) , sophomore Frank Reeg (Spring Lake, Mich.), freshman Maya Stephani (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) sailed in Massachusetts Maritime’s “B” vessel.
The Buccaneers stood in third place among the 11 entrants in the event after Saturday’s competition that featured light and shifting winds, but those conditions changed drastically on Sunday with winds exceeding 25 knots. Solid performances against those winds enabled Massachusetts Maritime to work its way to the top of the standings and top regional foes Tufts, Northeastern, Maine Maritime, UConn and Salve Regina.
The Buccaneers return to action next weekend at a pair of venues, with the dinghy squad heading to Cambridge, Mass. for the MIT Oberg Trophy and the offshore team traveling to Annapolis, Md. for the prestigious Navy MacMillan Cup.
