NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. -- Sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal as Massachusetts Maritime tallied three times in just under two-and-a-half minutes late in the match to post a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Mount Ida in the season opener for both schools Wednesday afternoon at Mount Ida Stadium.
After the two teams played a scoreless opening half, senior Jon White (Lynnfield, Mass.) notched the equalizer for the visiting Buccaneers (1-0) in the 78th minute of action on a feed from fellow senior Kyle Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.) after the host Mustangs (0-1) had grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute on senior Hermes Lima’s (Boston, Mass.) penalty kick conversion. Derek Young followed White’s goal just 2:05 later in converting an assist from senior Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) on the game-winner for Massachusetts Maritime, and junior James Gendrolis (Weymouth, Mass.) capped the scoring with an insurance marker for the visitors just 24 seconds later on McCord’s second feed of the day.
Freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory in his first career start in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with an 11-save effort, while junior Steve Enright (South Kingston, R.I.) made three stops in net for Mount Ida as the Mustangs outshot the Buccaneers by a 21-11 margin for the contest, including a 17-6 edge over the final 45 minutes of action.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to New London, Conn. on Friday evening to take on Coast Guard in a non-league outing that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Mount Ida hosts Lesley in a non-league encounter on Sunday afternoon at Mount Ida Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m.
