Nominate here for the Massachusetts Maritime Athletic Hall of Fame

The purpose of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Hall of Fame is to honor former athletes, Academy staff, alumni and individuals that have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics. Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the oldest continuously operating maritime academy in the nation, has maintained a reputation of excellence for over 120 years.

Student-athletes shall be eligible for consideration and induction into the Hall of Fame beginning no less than five years after graduation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Eligibility for former student-athletes for election to the Hall of Fame is based primarily on the athletic ability of the nominee as demonstrated by his / her performance. Consideration shall also be based on personal integrity, good character, academic achievement and high standards of sportsmanship.

College personnel presently or formerly employed at the Academy, as well as individuals who have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics shall be eligible.

A maximum of one (1) new member from college personnel, presently or formerly employed by MMA, or from individuals who have made a significant contribution to MMA Athletics.

A maximum of four (4) new members comprised of all student-athletes that have been nominated from classes beginning no less than five (5) years after graduation from the Academy.

Individuals who are selected for induction have a three-year window to attend the annual induction ceremony, beginning with the date of the next scheduled induction ceremony following selection.  This window is in place to accommodate any changes in schedule or other situations that prohibit an inductee from attending at their scheduled time.

NEW CHANGES FOR MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME SET TO TAKE PLACE FOR 2017 INDUCTION CEREMONY

The Massachusetts Maritime Athletic Hall of Fame is undergoing a few changes for the upcoming 2017 induction ceremony, which will now take place on Friday, November 10th at the Pande Dining Commons on campus beginning at 6:00 p.m. EST.

Moving the ceremony to the fall coincides with hosting the annual Ocean Spray Cranberry Bowl, as the induction ceremony will help kick off a weekend-long celebration of intercollegiate athletics across campus.  Beginning in 2017, the Buccaneer Athletic Hall of Fame will take place every two years instead of being an annual event, meaning the ceremony will always take place on the night before the Cranberry Bowl is played at Clean Harbors Stadium.

“The Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony is a highlight on our calendar, and moving the event to Cranberry Bowl weekend affords the opportunity for our honorees, guests, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate our athletic tradition throughout the entire weekend,” Massachusetts Maritime Director of Athletics Garin Veris said of the change.  “We look forward to making the biennial ceremony a new tradition that continues to recognize the excellence that is symbolic of the Academy.”

In addition to the new date, intercollegiate teams that competed at Massachusetts Maritime are now eligible for nomination and induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame beginning with the 2017 ceremony.  Since its founding in 2000, only individual nominees were previously eligible for induction.

“The success that so many of our teams have enjoyed over the years will greatly enhance the Athletic Hall of Fame,” Veris said.  “There are many deserving championship squads that have excelled at the conference, regional and national levels, and we look forward to honoring their accomplishments in the future.”

Nominations for the Massachusetts Maritime Athletic Hall of Fame may be submitted on-line by accessing the form located at www.mmabucs.com.  Nominations may also be submitted to Hall of Fame selection committee chair Jim Seavey by e-mail (jseavey@maritime.edu) or regular mail (c/o MMA Athletics, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532).
