Melanie Appleman, who guided Barnstable High School to a pair Division I Massachusetts state championships before embarking on a standout collegiate career at Bridgewater State University, is in her second season as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Massachusetts Maritime. Her first collegiate campaign saw the Buccaneers post their highest single-season win total in a decade last fall, and she was also tabbed as the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Sportsmanship Coach of the Year in a vote of her peers.
A native of Hyannis, Mass., Appleman helped lead Barnstable to an overall record of 62-7 during her career, as the Red Raiders captured back-to-back state crowns in 2007 and 2008 while advancing to the Division I South sectional final during her senior campaign in 2009. A three-time Old Colony League all-star as a setter and libero for legendary Head Coach Tom Turco, Appleman took her talents up the Cranberry Highway to Bridgewater State in 2010 and was a four-time all-MASCAC honoree and three-year team captain for the Bears, guiding her squad to a berth in the conference tournament championship match during her freshman and junior seasons.
Appleman, who earned her degree in Strategic Communication and Nutrition from Bridgewater State in 2014, was a standout on the lacrosse field as well, earning a pair of all-conference accolades in 2012 and 2013 while leading the Bears to four straight league titles and berths in the NCAA Division III Championships. A select member of Bridgewater State’s Captain’s Council as well as the Bears’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Melanie was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society and selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among College Students in America during her senior year, and she also earned MASCAC All-Academic team honors in volleyball and lacrosse while achieving a 3.86 cumulative grade point average.
A certified yoga instructor and strength & conditioning coach, Appleman was appointed as a Company Officer in Massachusetts Maritime's CADRE earlier this summer and began her tenure as a full-time Academy employee in August. As a student at Bridgewater State, she was a sports broadcasting and public relations intern for the Cape Cod Baseball League and also developed and implemented a strategic outreach campaign for the Bears’ athletics department.
