The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Department of Athletics is about to embark on an exciting year of athletic competition for our 14 male and female sports. Last year was my first full year of leading our student-athletes, coaches and staff as the Director of Athletics here on the MMA campus. I continue to marvel at the history and tradition of this institution and how much support is directed to our all of our cadets on campus. We cannot rest on the accomplishments of our past but must look ahead to how we can continue following our commitment to improvement and excellence.
Our administrative staff is prepared for the start of the fall season and the prospect of watching each of our teams compete against our fellow Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference institutions as well as other schools across the region. I have asked our staff to take on some new responsibilities and initiatives that I hope will help our department continue to be an integral part of achieving the goals established by Admiral McDonald.
Our student-athletes continue to amaze me with their commitment to excellence in competition, in the classroom and in the community. We continue to receive great support from our administration, faculty and alumni to ensure our programs create and ultimately achieve a path to graduation and a great start to our cadets’ future. We continue to seek increased support along the way from many facets of both the Maritime and Cape Cod communities, and we are grateful to everyone who is helping to shape our incredibly bright future.
Later this month, we will begin construction on a new artificial playing surface at Commodore Hendy Field, the home of Buccaneer baseball. The artificial field will provide our team with opportunities to play contests that have otherwise been postponed or ultimately cancelled due to inclement weather. The new surface will also provide much needed additional space for varsity, club and intramural activities and while greatly enhancing the overall cadet experience. This is just one of a few renovations we are looking to make for our athletic department in the years ahead.
Two new head coaches will be leading their teams at MMA this fall: Yvonna Press will lead the women’s soccer program into her first campaign after working as an assistant for the Bucs, while Jenna-Lynn Geary will be at the helm in her first season as the women’s volleyball coach after also serving in an assistant’s role. Additionally, we are in the process of hiring new head coaches for men’s lacrosse and softball. The recruiting efforts of our entire coaching staff continue to bring the best students and athletes around New England and the country to Buzzards Bay, and we strongly feel that our student-athletes can do both successfully. Our goal is to continue improving each of our programs as we move forward.
This past May, MMA Athletics, in partnership with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, hosted the 2017 NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament in Harwich, MA. Eight of the top 64 Division III baseball teams came to Cape Cod for four days of championship baseball and great weather at bucolic Whitehouse Field in Harwich, and Massachusetts Maritime was recognized on the national scene for its efforts. MMA Athletics will again seek to host the 2018 NCAA New England Regional Baseball Tournament on Cape Cod.
Our student-athletes, coaches and administrative staff continue to partner with many local charitable organizations including Special Olympics, The Riverview School, The Herren Project, Children’s Cove, TEAM Impact and more. The leaders and members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are truly outstanding and they represent what is so good about the concept of giving back to the Buccaneer community we live in.
MMA held three very successful golf tournament fundraisers this year. The 2nd Annual MMA Women’s Athletics Golf Tournament was held on May 8 and the MMA Football Golf Tournament was held on June 2. The Men’s Soccer/Baseball Tournament was held on July 7. We hope you will join us for one or all of our annual fundraising golf tournaments in 2018.
For only the second time in Academy history, there will be female cadet leading the Regiment of Cadets. Her name is Mikayla Correia and she is the starting goalie and co-captain for the Buccaneer women’s lacrosse team. Congratulations to Mikayla as she begins the important role as Regimental Commander!
It is a tremendous time to be a Buccaneer, and we hope you will continue to support our efforts. Whether you attend a game, support MMA Athletics through a donation or tell others about the great things happening here in Buzzards Bay, WE TRULY APPRECIATE IT! GO BUCS!
